A Wicked Silence explores the consequences of the Eugenics program in North Carolina.  From 1919-1977, forced sterilization of patients of public-funded institutions that were judged to be 'mentally defective or feeble-minded' by authorities” which later evolved into impoverished populations. This  dance performance project will bring these stories to light in context to  new policies that  are being proposed which greatly affect the life and liberty of the marginalized in the 21st century.

This production is an immersive site-specific performance presented by Greensboro Downtown Parks, Inc. This project is supported by the N.C. Arts Council, a Division of the Department of Natural and Cultural Resources, ArtsGreensboro, and Elsewhere Museum.

Take a look at this article about A Wicked Silence in YES Weekly from March 22, 2021, and the amazing promo photos of A Wicked Silence (further town this page) that feature performers moving around the museum wearing clothing from out of the Elsewhere Wardrobe! Did you know that we make loan agreements with theaters, dance companies, and other entities to use our collection of vintage clothing in their productions?

Elsewhere has hired alumni artist, Antoine Williams (‘16), to produce designs for mobile and modular set elements that will be fabricated from materials in our collection. We are also providing financial support, project consultation, costumes and props, supplies, space, equipment, and outreach for this important collaborative production.

Additional support is needed! Please consider becoming an individual or business sponsor of “A Wicked Silence.” Contact Alexandra at joyemovement@gmail.com for more information.

COMMUNITY WORKSHOPS

A series of three community workshops are by Greensboro Downtown Parks with support from ArtsGreensboro and NC Arts Council. The public is invited to join Alex and JOYEMOVEMENT dance company in these participatory dance experiences exploring concepts the choreographer has addressed in her development of the ‘choreoplay’, A Wicked Silence. Workshop participants should come prepared to learn from and dance alongside the artist, as they move together through creative exercises addressing three themes of this Artist in Residence experience: Space, Self, and Community.

Workshops are FREE to attend and drop-ins are welcome. Open to all levels of experience, ages 13+. Participants are encouraged to come ready to dance with comfy clothes/shoes and a water bottle.

Site-Specific Dance Workshop
Saturday, July 10, 2-3pm (Meet at Price/Bryan Stage in LeBauer Park)

This Site-Specific Dance Workshop will invite participants to explore LeBauer and Center City Parks in a whole new way, as we learn what it means to interact with park spaces and features through creative movement. How do you dance WITH a space, and not just in it? What elements in your experience with the parks inspire you to move? By creating site-specific choreography, we'll explore questions like these while dancing with the playground features of the Children's Garden, the flowers in Carolyn's Garden, the synchronized jets of the Center City fountain, and more. Facebook; Eventbrite

Embodying Narrative Dance Workshop
Tuesday, July 27, 6:30-7:30pm
(Meet at Price/Bryan Stage in LeBauer Park)

This Embodying Narrative Dance Workshop will explore telling stories of self and identity through movement. How do we translate our concrete experiences through the body? What are the stories that the body wants to tell? These are questions we'll explore as we ask you to come prepared to interpret your stories of self through dance. Facebook; Eventbrite

Relating to Others, Building Community Dance Workshop
Tuesday, August 10, 6:30-7:30pm
(Meet at Price/Bryan Stage in LeBauer Park)

This dance workshop, titled 'Relating to Others, Building Community', will introduce group movement exercises that encourage participants to explore themes of community building. We'll come together through dance to convey ideas in a meaningful way. How can creative movement help us communicate effectively with others? What happens when we create and showcase ideas together?
