Elsewhere Stories: Saba Taj - "My Practice and Encountering the Elsewhere Residency Experience"

  • Virtual Event (Zoom) (map)

Friday 11/6, 5:30-6:30PM EST (First Friday) - Saba Taj

“My Practice and Encountering the Elsewhere Residency Experience”

Saba Taj will present their work with particular focus on monsters, Islamic mythologies, and everything liminal. As a Southern Constellations Fellow at Elsewhere in 2017, they made "Interstellar Uber // Negotiations with God," a kinetic Buraq sculpture that still resides in the museum's Ghost Room. Taj will share how their residency and this particular work have impacted their subsequent practice.

Saba Taj is a visual artist based out of Durham, NC. Inspired by Islamic stories, sci-fi, and revolution, Taj’s work explores representation, the gaze, queerness, and the body. They employ practices including mixed-media drawing, painting, and collage, as well as sewing and performance. Through these techniques, Taj seeks to celebrate subjects who are often characterized as monstrous, highlighting their hybridity and liminality as an embodied resistance to subjugation.
