The Compartment Store by Suzy Kopf: Kopf dismantled Elsewhere’s former Department Store and erected in its place the Compartment Store, an installation of well over a thousand museum items curated, arranged and installed on numerous shelves, the surrounding counters and the Co-founder’s desks. Shelves labeled with humor infused signage like “Mostly Bowling” and “Bad Habits” reference the limitations and dreams of 20th century America. Furthermore, the work deeply reflects the collecting interests of both Sylvia Gray and Co-founder Stephanie Sherman, who amassed a number of the items in the previous installation, here reimagined. The work functions as homage to the many lands within the great city of Elsewhere and the possibilities present within prior ‘lost causes’.

Suzy Kopf

Originally from the awesome, San Francisco, CA, Suzy Kopf is currently based in hip-center of the universe, Brooklyn, NY. Suzy devotes most of the time she isn’t dodging the question, “Which city do you prefer, Brooklyn or San Francisco?,” making prints and paintings with a focus on the shifting American landscape and our evolving relationship with the digital. She graduated magna cum laude from Parsons with a BFA in Fine Arts and Eugene Lang College with a BA in Art History. This summer she will begin her MFA in Painting at MICA. She is passionate about preserving the arts in public schools, color coded organizing systems and tipping well. She can parallel park better than you.
