Instructions on Waving | Sidney Stretz

Elsewhere Goes To Madison. April 2018. Photographs & real life observations, ink, paper, xerox copies.
“Waving to your neighbors is a customary sign that you belong to a place. Individuals have expressed this greeting (when traveling to and from) in a myriad of ways, from short gestures to exaggerated movements.”
After studying and noting a variety of greetings used within small neighborhoods and rural regions in Madison, NC and surrounding areas, Stretz illustrated diagrams of the symbols of rightful place for audiences to recreate site-specific ways of saying “Hello.” These greetings range from frequently used to rare, and are all acceptable as a way to communicate with your neighbor.
Installed inside of Box Tire Mobile (a 35-foot bus renovated to exhibit works for the town’s Bicentennial), Instructions On Waving acknowledges questions and experiences that address community, trust, property, and change.
