Fe3O4, [Fe]=O | Franky Cruz
Fe3O4, [Fe]=O, Franky Cruz (Miami, FL).
March 2017. Mixed media on paper, installation. Rust pigment, wood, found objects.
In a dark corner of Elsewhere’s third floor, Cruz built a temple-like laboratory and studio out of found wood. There, he spent time with the most discarded and corroded objects of the Elsewhere collection, experimenting with the rusted form to investigate questions of perpetuity, decay, and the archive.
Extracting rust from old combustion engines, Cruz developed his own oxide inks and paints. His resulting prints and paintings use the very material of deterioration to depict objects in process of decay. As time passes, Cruz’s oxide pigments will begin to eat away at the paper beneath, eventually leaving viewers with only a negative of the former paintings.
